Central Vermont Adult Basic Education, Inc.

A Variety of Volunteer Opportunities
CVABE volunteers work in conjunction with our Teacher/Community Coordinators to access local resources and move the community toward full literacy.

CVABE offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, and we are eager to hear about your ideas for innovative activities we can pursue to better promote literacy in central Vermont.

Many volunteers are tutors, helping adult students with reading, writing, and math; helping a student learn English as a new language; supporting a student’s progress in getting a high school diploma or equivalent (GED); or working with parents who are building skills in order to read with his children. Computer-savvy volunteers are assisting students as they learn basic computer applications, keyboarding, internet searches, and email.

Activities with Students
Volunteers participate in activities with students, working with reading and discussion groups, going on field trips and other events which reinforce student learning and engagement with his/her community.

Training and Professional Development
Volunteers offer workshops on topics in which they are trained or have expertise. Whether targeted to students, staff or volunteers, a volunteer’s special skills help CVABE better serve its communities.

Office Support Activities
As with any organization, we have our office duties—data entry, answering the phones, filing, organizing books in our libraries, re-stocking the supply room, making copies, assisting with mailings. Your time volunteered to help with these administrative tasks is enormously important and it’s a great way to become familiar with CVABE as a first step towards other levels of responsibility.

Fund Raising and Development Support
Many volunteers work with board members helping with special events that enable CVABE to raise funds.

Outreach and Public Relations
Volunteers help arrange presentations on literacy and adult learning for service clubs and churches, at Town Meetings and at places of employment. They staff information tables at fairs and community events, distribute CVABE flyers and posters, and advocate on behalf of CVABE in the community.
